1967


The Suez Canal was closed causing an increase in maritime traffic around Africa.

April 1968

The Esso Essen tanker ran aground off Cape Point in April spilling 15 000 tonnes of fuel oil and affecting more than 3 000 seabirds.

Nov 1968


The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) was officially constituted in November.

23 Nov 1970

Kazimah wrecked on rocks on Robben Island.  More than 1,000 penguins (dead and alive) affected.

27 Feb 1971

Wafra ran aground 5 miles off Cape Agulhas.  Leaked 13 000 tonnes of oil on to the water.  Fencing in operation saves majority of Dyer Island penguin population.

Moved to temporary premises in Wetton

1972

Oiled penguins

Unidentified spill off Dassen Island affects 4,000 birds

1972

Collision of 2 tankers at Ystervark Point oils 4,000 birds

1974

Oriental Pioneer wrecked off Struisbaai.  Oiled thousands of birds.

1977

Collision of 2 tankers at Cape St Francis oils a few birds

1983

The tanker Castillo de Bellver disaster off Saldanha BaySupertanker Castillo de Belver exploded and broke in two, off Saldanha Bay.  Released oil affected 1,400 Cape Gannets on Malgas Island and Lambert's Bay and 800 African Penguins.

Boulders Beach, the new domain of the African Penguins

African Penguins colonised Boulders Beach, Simon's Town

Aug 1985

Capodistrias, bulk carrier, runs aground off Cape Recife, PE oils more than 900 penguins

1994

Apollo Sea disaster affects more than 10,000 sea birds

1995

Mystery spill off Dyer Island affected 1,600 penguins

1996

MV Cordigliera sank north of Port St Johns.  1,200 penguins oiled

1997

No major spill but SANCCOB treats 750 penguins & over 300 other types of Sea bird.

24 May 1998

Cape Town Harbour
Cape Town Harbour Spill affects 521 penguins and over 150 cormorants

June 1998

Unidentified spill off Malgas Island affects over 300 Cape gannets

July 1999

Unidentified spill off Malgas Island affects over 220 Cape gannets

June 2000 Thousands of volunteers helped the sea birdsMV Treasure sinks 8km off Table Bay, Cape Town, releasing 1 300 tonnes of fuel, causing the world's worst ever coastal bird crisis, critically endangering over 41% of the Penguin species.
2001 There were no major spills, but SANCCOB treated 817 African Penguins.

2002 Althea Westphal, co-founder of SANCCOB, died on August 4th.

2002 There were no major oil spills in this year, but SANCCOB treated 977 African penguins.

2003 There were no major oil spills in this year, but SANCCOB treated 1,052 African penguins.

2004 There were no major oil spills in this year, but SANCCOB treated 655 African penguins.

2005 There were no major oil spills in this year, but SANCCOB treated 952 African penguins.
